| The
Chancel Choir of the Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church regularly
practices the ancient tradition of singing praise to the glory of
God. The Chancel Choir welcomes any adult who wishes to participate
in the musical ministry of the church by singing.
Music
The
choir sings a wide variety of music throughout the year, ranging
from the standard liturgical music of Bach to spirituals to modern
choir arrangements and compositions. Most music is four part (soprano,
alto, tenor, bass). Occasional women's choir and men's choir selections
are also prepared throughout the year. The choir is accompanied
by the church organist, Amy Shirk, on the Baroque pipe organ of
the church, as well as by other instrumentalists who are willing
to add their skills to the musical ministry of the church.
Worship Service
The
choir is responsible for providing music that enhances the liturgy
for each Sunday morning worship service. A typical Sunday morning
for the choir involves fellowship time and a brief run-through of
music approximately 25 minutes prior to the worship service. During
the service, the choir is generally responsible for the introit,
prayer response, anthem and benediction. The choir sings at both
services - individual members may sing at either the early service,
late service, or both if desired.
For special events in the church calendar, the choir prepares somewhat
more demanding music. Past holiday seasons have included Vivaldi's
Gloria, Bach's Cantatas, Rutter's Requiem,
Mozart's Requiem and Faure's Requiem. This music is
prepared well in advance under the leadership of directors Larry
and Mary Ann Casey to allow all levels of singers to feel comfortable
performing this excellent music.
Other Events
The choir has been involved in community choral events, including
combined choir performances with Saint Georges and the Methodist
Church of Fredericksburg to benefit the Fredericksburg area Hospice.
The choir has also presented musical shows for the fellowship of
the congregation outside of worship services. An example of this
event was a Vaudeville show, complete with dancing, singing, a serenade
of a father to his daughter, and, of course, what Vaudeville show
is complete without a "bad cop" skit!
Rehearsals
Rehearsals for the Chancel Choir take place every Thursday evening
at 7:30 PM in the choir room, which is located under the sanctuary.
Talk to Larry or Mary Ann about singing with us, or feel free to
come join us on Thursday evening!
